About
Ellin LaVar is the founder and hair designer of LaVar Hair Designs. She started working in a salon with her own chair by the age of 14, and she developed a hair weaving method in her teens that led to the Invisible Braids technique.
Her work spans braiding, weaving, hairstyling and natural-looking hairpieces and wigs, many of which she makes herself. She has braided the hair of Susan L. Taylor, editorial director of Essence, for about twenty years. Her film credits include Out of Time, Predator 1 and 2, Knocking Hell, Stepmom, Runaway Bride, Waiting to Exhale, The Preacher's Wife, Sleepers, Ghost Dog and The Best Man. A Whitney Houston wig from Cinderella earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Stylist in a Miniseries.
Clients include Donatella Versace, Julia Roberts, Bono, Lauren Velez and Gabourey Sidibe. She is also known for developing the Ellin LaVar TEXTURES hair care line, which is sold at CVS pharmacies nationwide, and she was the first Black woman to have a nationally distributed hair care line sold by a major drugstore chain.
