Dr. Michael Krathen

Michael Krathen serves as Medical Director of Essential Dermatology. He is board-certified in dermatology, a certification held through the American Board of Dermatology since 2011. His practice covers medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology, and he sees patients of every age, families included, in Natick, Needham and the surrounding communities. He also works as a Consultant Dermatologist at Newton-Wellesley Hospital and at Beth Israel Deaconess Needham Hospital.

He studied biology and Spanish at the University of Pennsylvania, attending from 1999 to 2003, and received his medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 2007. Training included an internship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Clinical Fellowship at Harvard Medical School, and a dermatology residency in the Tufts University-Boston University Dermatology Residency Program. Earlier roles included Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Dermatology at Stanford University School of Medicine from 2011 to 2013, Staff Dermatologist with Adult and Pediatric Dermatology from 2014 to 2017, and a period with DermCare Physicians and Surgeons from 2017 to 2019.

His work centers on acne, psoriasis, skin cancer detection and treatment, scar revision, and resurfacing with advanced lasers. He offers minimally invasive aesthetic procedures and helps each patient decide which option suits them. During routine skin checks he looks for suspicious moles or lesions and treats them without delay.
