Two boards certify him: the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology. He has held a Texas State Medical License since 1998, following an earlier license in New York State.

He earned his Doctor of Medicine with highest honors at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston between 1993 and 1997, graduating in the top 2 percent of his class. The following year and a half brought a general surgery internship there, followed by an otolaryngology and head and neck surgery residency from 1998 to 2002. A facial plastic and reconstructive surgery fellowship from 2002 to 2003 took place at Albany Medical Center and the New England Laser and Cosmetic Surgery Center, where he also served as attending surgeon and clinical instructor at Albany Medical Center and the Albany Veterans Administration Hospital. He is now a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch.
