About
Crystal Porter is the owner and head scientist of Mane Insights, Inc., in Naperville, Illinois, which she founded to research the needs of curly ethnic hair scientifically. She holds a PhD and has worked in the hair industry since 2000.
Most of her corporate career was spent at L'Oréal, USA, where she managed the Physics Laboratory and Consumer Insights teams and studied the biophysical characteristics of hair and pigmented skin across ethnic groups. She led international projects on hair from around the world and on how products and treatments affect it, and she has published findings in peer-reviewed journals. She left L'Oréal with more than a decade of experience behind her.
Her research centers on the hair of people of African origin, an area with limited available information. Over more than 20 years she has consulted on hair and consumer research for individuals, professionals and industry leaders.
